Fastenings in which a loop attached to the fore-edge and possibly the head and tail edges of one side of a cover fit over a toggle attached to the opposite edge. Toggles were also used to secure fore-edge envelope flaps, with the toggle attached to the flap and the loop attached to the opposite side of the cover.

This type of fastening is observed on 9th - 11th century Coptic bindings and occasionally in other Eastern Mediterranean traditions (e.g. Arabic, Byzantine and Syriac). They are commonly found on Medieval European stationery bindings as well as limp bindings on manuscripts and printed books.
