tape (materials)

Narrow, flexible strips, as of cloth, paper, plastic, or metal, used for measuring lines, tying garments, or other purposes for which flat strings are suited. Distinguished from "ribbons," which are typically decorative rather than, or in addition to, being functional. For tapes having specific uses, use the appropriate term, such as "adhesive tape."
