separate pastedowns

A leaf of sheet material pasted to the inside of a board or cover which is not conjugate with any component in the adjacent endleaf unit, leaving either an open joint or pasted over the outer element of a leather or textile joint. Separate pastedowns may be original to the binding, but could be added at a later date to a binding without pastedowns to hide the exposed inner surface of the boards. Separated pieces of decorated sheet material may also by described as separate pastedowns even when they are used in conjunction with inner joints.
