The use of threads laced through holes and/or tunnels drilled in the boards and often lying in channels cut into the surfaces of the boards between the holes to which the outermost gatherings can then be sewn. The bridling may be done either before or after the book is sewn. In cases where there is double-sequence sewing, the bridling has to be done before the gatherings are sewn.
